Service

I have been a part of the Kentucky YMCA Youth Association where I have learned about many governmental processes and civic engagement while also learning the importance of service.

Here I have collected nonperishable food items for the local food pantry during the height of the 2020 pandemic. During this process I organized a district-wide food drive by contacting local elementary, middle, and high schools along with churches to collect widely needed items. Not only did this open up an opportunity to run for a highly competitive leadership position at my next youth conference but it allowed me to give back to my community.

Sports

Ever since I was little I have always been involved in sports. I have played high school volleyball for 5 years and have been on the varsity swim team for 3 years. During this period of time I learned a lot of life lessons and persevered through many personal challenges.

Here I participated in the region swim meet where I competed in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, the 50 freestyle, and 100 back stroke. During the swim season I practiced four days a week at 5:30 am and then I went to school. Not only did I learn the importance of hard work during this time, but I was able to participate in a sport where I was able to see my own personal growth clearly.

Here are a few examples of me playing volleyball. One is of pink out night when we raised awareness for anyone who has had, fought, and recovered from cancer, and this picture and caption was posted by 104 the score. And then the other picture is after we won our first game in the district tournament to Monroe County and went eventually on to region after winning 2nd place at District. By keeping a 4.0 grade point average while taking AP and dual credit classes, I was able to learn how to manage my time during volleyball season.

Leadership

When I was younger I looked for every opportunity to become a leader. In the far left picture in the left corner, I had just been chosen as the senior class representative for the Barren County School District Council. Not only am I a part of an incredible leadership team, but I can give back to my teachers and fellow students by planning service projects and learning how to be a more effective leader. In the bottom left picture, I am participating as an Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs at the Kentucky United Nations Assembly. At this conference, I was in charge of determining whether or not a resolution was legal for a specific country. Also throughout high school, I have looked for opportunities to challenge myself. For example, if you click on the middle picture you will hear a speech I gave while running as a candidate for presiding officer at my junior KYA. I may not have won but I was able to make connections with leaders all across the state. And if you click on the last picture you will hear my advertisement for senior class president. I have gained confidence throughout my high school career and It has allowed me to gain many leadership skills.

Research

In this PDF, I have attached my AP Research final research paper that was submitted to the college board last spring. Last year I spent the whole school year working on my research project about how pharmaceutical direct-to-consumer advertising affects how healthcare providers prescribe their patients. For the first start of the semester, I spent my time researching scholarly articles about pharmaceutical DTCA, educating myself on the different aspects of the problem. Then in the second semester, I spent my time conducting my own personal research where I sent a survey to healthcare providers in the south-central Kentucky area to see their take on DTCA. While completing this research I found something that enjoyed doing and learning about. I learned not only how to look at different scholarly sources but how to make my own conclusions for different world issues.
